Mike Christie's trip along the iconic Route 66 in the USA was a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, travelling with a tour group on Harley-Davidson motorcycles—a fitting choice given the brand’s deep roots in American motorcycle culture. The journey, spanning over 3,000 miles (around 5,000 km) and crossing 11 states, took him and his group from the heart of Chicago to California, crossing some of the country's most scenic and historic regions.

From the very beginning, the trip was filled with excitement. Mike and his companions were diverse, including New Zealanders, Australians, Brazilians, Germans, and Americans. They quickly formed a bond, sharing the highs and challenges of long-distance travel. Riding together, they navigated through major cities like Chicago and small, nostalgic Route 66 towns like Pontiac and Seligman, Arizona, where time seemed to have stood still. These towns, with their vintage diners, historic landmarks, and quirky roadside attractions, offered a glimpse into America's past, giving the group a sense of connection to the travellers who had once ventured down this very road.
Among the many highlights was a stop at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, home to a breathtaking collection of motorcycles. Visiting this museum was a special highlight, as it showcased the history of Harley-Davidson, and the group felt a deep sense of pride riding the same brand that had played such a significant role in shaping American motorcycle culture.
The adventure wasn’t just about sightseeing, though. Riding across the vast American landscape posed several physical and mental challenges. The group rode through extreme heat, soaring to 110°F (43°C) in the Nevada desert. They used specialised cooling gear to cope, but the heat still took a toll, especially during long, straight stretches of road. Mike admitted that after not riding for 25 years, the journey was far more demanding than he anticipated. The gruelling schedule of riding 8-10 hours a day was exhausting, and staying focused became difficult, especially on roads that seemed endless.
Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, the companionship and the unforgettable sights made it a journey worth every hardship.
